Best Pizza in Great Kills and the South Shore
This is the least-mapped pizza in New York City, and it has far more range than the reputation suggests. Thirteen spots here cover a coal oven, a Sicilian square specialist, a bar pie, a vodka pie and a brick oven doing clams and hot honey. There is no other stretch of the city where thirteen pizzerias are this different from one another.
Richmond Avenue is the top of it. Campania runs a coal oven and is the one spot down here worth the drive from anywhere on the island. A few blocks on, Sal & Lloyd's does the straightforward Eltingville slice. Over on Hylan Boulevard, Goodfella's is known well beyond the borough for its vodka pie.
Head south and it quietens. Mimmo's in Great Kills fires a brick oven with New York oak and puts out a clam pie and a cup-and-char honey pie. The Square on Annadale builds its whole menu around the upside-down Sicilian, sauce over cheese. Casa Nino's on Arthur Kill Road does the thin bar pie.
Keep going and you run out of city. Vesuvio Trattoria on Amboy Road is the southernmost pizzeria in New York, with Nonna's on Page Avenue a few streets behind it. Do not confuse that Nonna's with Nonna's Pizza Great Kills on Brower Court — different places, several miles apart, and both worth knowing.
Every Pizzeria from Eltingville to Tottenville (13 spots)
A brick oven pizzeria on Amboy Road in the Prince's Bay area of Staten Island, sit-down Neapolitan-style pies in the borough's quieter south end.
A coal-fired Neapolitan pizzeria on Richmond Avenue in Staten Island, one of the borough's best destinations for a quality sit-down pie — worth a trip from anywhere on the island.
One of four Campania locations across Staten Island and Brooklyn. Pizza is the specialty at this casual Italian restaurant, and there is an outdoor seating area.
A Staten Island pizza bar on Arthur Kill Road, known for thin-crust bar pies and a sit-down atmosphere in the Woodrow neighborhood.
A brick-oven Staten Island staple best known for its vodka pie — rich, creamy, and consistently well-executed. One of the borough's most recommended spots for anyone visiting from outside.
A family-owned Great Kills trattoria with a real brick oven fired by NY oak wood at 650°F. Creative specialty pies — the clam, the steak and caramelized onion, the cup-and-char honey pie — in a full Italian dining room with a warm, rustic southern Italian atmosphere.
A Tottenville neighborhood pizzeria at the southernmost tip of Staten Island — and arguably of all of New York City. The kind of local institution where regulars know the staff and the menu hasn't changed much in years, which is exactly the point.
A Great Kills neighborhood pizzeria tucked away on Brower Court — the kind of local spot that doesn't need a sign out front because the regulars already know where it is.
An Amboy Road pizzeria in Tottenville-adjacent Staten Island, a classic neighborhood go-to for NY-style pies.
An Arthur Kill Road neighborhood pizzeria in Woodrow, classic NY-style pies in the quiet southern end of Staten Island.
A Richmond Avenue pizzeria in Eltingville, a classic neighborhood spot that's been serving Staten Island with classic New York pies.
An Annadale neighborhood staple built around the authentic Sicilian square pie — thick, cheese-forward, and sauced on top in the upside-down style. One of the south shore's most consistent and welcoming spots, with a friendly owner and a loyal regulars crowd.
A Tottenville trattoria and pizzeria on Amboy Road, at the very southern tip of Staten Island and New York City. Sit-down Neapolitan pies and Italian-American fare.
